Pervez Musharraf, the former President of Pakistan, has died at the age of 79 after a long battle with a rare illness in a hospital in Dubai.

He ruled Pakistan for nearly a decade after seizing power in a 1999 military coup and oversaw rapid economic growth despite being targeted by three assassination attempts by Al Qaeda.

He lost his first democratic election in 2008 and was charged with treason in parliament, which led to his resignation and flight to London.

He returned to Pakistan in 2013 to run for parliament but was disqualified and left for Dubai in 2016. He was being treated at an American hospital in Dubai,

according to local media and diplomatic sources. He had been suffering from a rare disease that causes organ failure and was moved to the hospital due to complications from his illness.

His family stated that he was in a critical stage and that recovery was unlikely.
