Uvalde Chief Pete Arredondo on administrative leave after 'failure' to stop shooting

Reuters

The district police chief, who delayed an attack on the mass shooter that killed 19 students and teachers in Ofaldi, Texas, has been placed on administrative leave, the district police chief said in a statement Wednesday.

The statement said Chief Pete Arredondo was responsible for the law enforcement response in Ofaldi on May 24 and will be replaced by Lieutenant Mike Hernandez, the statement said.

The head of the Texas Department of Public Safety on Tuesday called the response a "total failure" not to intervene immediately while the shooter was still hiding in the classroom where the children were killed.
