The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion after 50 years of constitutional protection, in one of the most politically divisive cases in the United States.

The court overturned a landmark decision from 1973 that said a woman had the right to an abortion. It said that, as it did before the 1970s, each state could allow or restrict the procedure.

The Associated Press reported that the decision was made by the court's conservative majority, adding that the decision is expected to ban abortion in nearly half of the states.

The agency says that this decision, which was unthinkable just a few years ago, is the result of decades of work by people who are against abortion.

She noted that three right-wing judges appointed by former President Donald Trump helped pass it.
