Ukraine pleads for more weapons, cholera spreads in Mariupol

Ukraine wants additional weaponry for the conflict in the east. The mayor of Mariupol is concerned that cholera would kill thousands of people there.

Ukraine asked for additional assistance from the West on Friday, calling for speedier delivery of weaponry to counter better-armed Russian soldiers and humanitarian aid to tackle dangerous illnesses.

Further intense combat was reported in Sievierodonetsk, the little city that has become the focal point of Russia's assault in eastern Ukraine and one of the worst flashpoints in a conflict that is now in its fourth month.

To the south, the mayor of Mariupol, which has been reduced to rubble as a result of a Russian siege, stated that sanitary systems were failing and bodies were decomposing in the streets.

"Dysentery and cholera are on the rise... The battle that claimed over 20,000 inhabitants... Sadly, with these illness outbreaks, many more Mariupolites will perish," he said on national television.

He urged the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to work together to create a humanitarian corridor that would enable surviving civilians to exit the city, which is now under Russian control.
