As part of the biggest change to the alliance's defenses since the Cold War, the number of forces on high alert will go from 40,000 to over 300,000.

Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO will make a big change to the number of its forces that are in high readiness.

The decisions will be made at a historic summit of the 30 countries in NATO this week in Madrid. The summit is happening while Russia is at war in Ukraine.

Currently, the NATO Response Force includes about 40 thousand soldiers, sailors, and air personnel.
