German howitzers soon to be ready for use in Ukraine - minister

Ukrainian forces will soon be trained on German howitzers, opening the path for the weapons to be used in Ukraine's battle, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Tuesday.

Ukraine has asked the West to supply additional and better artillery because it is running out of ammunition for its current Soviet-era arsenal, which is dwarfed by Russia's.

NATO-standard weaponry has been promised by Western nations, but their deployment is taking time.

"The training on the Panzerhaubitze 2000 will soon be finished so that it may be deployed in the war in Ukraine," Lambrecht said during a visit to a military camp in Rheinbach, western Germany.

The Panzerhaubitze 2000 is one of the most powerful artillery weapons in the Bundeswehr arsenal, with a range of 40 kilometers (25 miles).

Germany vowed in May to equip Kyiv with seven self-propelled howitzers, in addition to the five similar artillery systems offered by the Netherlands.
