Explosions and gunfire at a Sikh temple in the Afghan capital, Kabul

2 dead after explosions hit Kabul gurdwara, India 'monitoring' situation

Several sources say that on Saturday, at least two people were killed and three security officers were hurt when three explosions hit a gurdwara in Kabul. The Ministry of Interior confirmed the bombings by saying that a group of armed rebels broke into the gurdwara in the Kart-e-Parwan district. In a statement, the Ministry said, "Before getting in, the enemy attacked the guards with a grenade, which started a fire. Two of our Hindu countrymen were taken out of the building and taken to a hospital for treatment."

According to the statement, the rebels also exploded a vehicle bomb before it reached its intended target. "Luckily, they couldn't get to where they wanted to go, so they blew up a car bomb before they got there." "We heard a loud bang which hit the temple entrance at approximately 6 a.m.," a witness told Xinhua news agency. Two further explosions erupted within the temple after the first. " As a safety measure, security guards have put up a rope around the area, and multiple warning shots have been fired, he said. Two people were killed in the initial bomb, according to a security source. According to videos posted on social media, smoke billowed from the two-story gurdwara, which is encircled by blast barriers. The general public and the media have been barred from entering the facility, and no one knows what is going on within. Earlier in the day, India's Ministry of External Affairs said that it was keeping a close eye on the situation. "We are gravely worried by news coming out of Kabul concerning an assault on a precious gurdwara in that city," Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a statement. "We're keeping a careful eye on the situation and waiting for further information on the latest developments." A gurdwara in central Kabul was struck in March 2020, killing two dozen worshipers. In the past few months, the war-torn country has been hit by a number of terror attacks, which are thought to have been carried out by the Islamic State (IS) terror group, which is against the Taliban-led government. An explosion damaged a mosque in the northern province of Kunduz on Friday, killing one person and injuring seven others.
