(Times England) - Workers facing increased bills should consider working longer hours or changing jobs, according to a government minister.

Rachel Maclean, safeguarding minister in the Home Office, said famililes could “protect” themselves from soaring energy and food bills and tax risis by working more.

On Monday, she told Sky News' Kay Burley, "I think what we need to focus on now is over the long-term."

"We are all aware of the short-term pressures we are under.

"We need a long-term plan to strengthen the economy and ensure that individuals can better protect themselves, whether that means working longer hours or shifting to a better-paying job."

"These are long-term efforts, but they are what the government is focused on."

Ms. Mclean admitted that finding better-paying or more jobs would not be for everyone.

"It may be good for certain people, and they may be able to get extra hours," she continued, "but it will not work for people who are already doing three jobs."
