Government’s vaccines committee recommends autumn Covid jabs

Despite the uncertainties surrounding future Covid waves, officials believe that winter will be the best time to get the virus.

Autumn Covid vaccinations should be given to vulnerable populations and health and social care workers, according to the government's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

Despite "substantial uncertainty" about the possibility and intensity of future Covid waves, the JCVI stated in interim advice to the government on Thursday that winter would continue to be the season when the threat from Covid is highest.

The goal of a Covid booster program in the autumn of 2022, it added, would be to raise "population immunity and protection" against severe Covid sickness, hospitalization, and mortality throughout the winter.
