The Kremlin said on Monday that Russia's President Vladimir Putin told Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Russia is ready to send large amounts of fertilizers and food to Turkey if the West lifts its sanctions against Moscow.

The state news agency TASS said that in light of the problems in the global food market caused by the short-sighted financial and economic policies of Western states, it has been confirmed that Russia can export large amounts of fertilizers and agricultural products if the relevant anti-Russian sanctions are lifted.

Putin also said that Russia would be willing to help cargo, such as grains from Ukrainian ports, move freely by sea.

"When talking about the situation in Ukraine, the focus was on making sure ships can travel safely in the Black and Azov seas and getting rid of the threat of mines in those seas." Putin said that the Russian side was ready to work with Turkish partners to make sure that goods could move through the sea without any problems. This is also true for grain shipped out of Ukrainian ports, "TASS said.

After Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the US and its European allies slapped crippling sanctions on Russia.

The sanctions have disrupted supplies of fertilizer, grains, and other commodities from both Russia and Ukraine, which together produce 30 percent of the world's wheat supply.

The supply interruption has resulted in what foreign authorities have termed a food catastrophe.

Ankara informed Putin that Ankara was willing to participate in a "monitoring mechanism" in Istanbul between Moscow, Kiev, and the UN if a peace agreement could be agreed.

Erdogan also told his Russian counterpart that peace needs to be made as soon as possible and that trust-building steps need to be taken to end the conflict in Ukraine.
