President Yoon Suk-yeol of South Korea and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, are meeting for the first time in the South Korean capital, with the goal of improving ties amid concerns over North Korean provocations, such as threats of a nuclear or missile launch.

Biden landed in South Korea on the first leg of his Asian visit that also includes a swing in neighboring Japan the day before the meeting at the People's House in Seoul.

The trip, which is Biden's first as president, is intended to reassure allies of the US's commitment to the area while also challenging China's expanding influence at a time when the world's attention is focused on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the meeting, the official said the two leaders are anticipated to express their intention to enhance the South Korea-US alliance and to reaffirm their commitment to Korean peninsula denuclearization.

They will talk about how to deal with North Korea's escalating nuclear and missile programs, which have resulted in a record 16 weapons tests this year. According to US and South Korean authorities, the North is preparing to test its seventh nuclear bomb, which might happen during Biden's six-day Asia visit.
