Husband of teacher killed in Texas shooting dies of heart attack

The spouse of a teacher murdered in the Texas school shooting has died of a heart attack, according to his family.

Joe Garcia was preparing for the funeral of Irma Garcia, his high school sweetheart and wife of 24 years, when he fell and died on Thursday, according to his nephew John Martinez.

According to The Times, the couple leaves behind four children, the eldest of which is 23 and the others are teens.

Irma Garcia, 46, was one of two teachers slain at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday, along with 19 students. According to relatives briefed by officials, Garcia and her co-teacher Eva Mireles perished while attempting to protect their students.

"Extremely heartbreaking and come with deep sorrow to say that my Tia Irma’s husband Joe Garcia has passed away due to grief, I truly am at a loss for words for how we are all feeling," Mr Martinez wrote on his Twitter account, using the Spanish word for "aunt" and requesting prayers for the family.

"God have mercy on us, this isn't easy."

Mr Martinez, a 21-year-old Texas State University student, said Joe Garcia died after returning home after carrying flowers to a memorial for his wife.

According to Mr Martinez, he "very much just fell down." "I'm in a state of shock right now."
