Argentina's Angel Di Maria to retire from international football after World Cup

Argentine striker Angel Di Maria will retire after this year's World Cup in Qatar.
Angel di Maria will retire after the World Cup in Qatar. Di Maria will continue playing club football, but his international career will finish this year.

"It's time after the World Cup. There are many international players who are becoming better and will soon prove themselves "Di Maria told reporters before Wednesday's encounter at Wembley.

Di Maria, 34, has 121 international appearances and 24 goals. He scored the winning goal as Argentina overcame Brazil 1-0 to win the Copa America in July.

Di Maria will leave PSG this summer and has yet to determine where he will play next season, but he claimed continuing at the international level 'would be a little selfish after so many years'

"After (Qatar) I’ll certainly be taking a step sideways."

Argentina's "Finalissima" against Italy, the incumbent European champions, is slated for this year. This match is June 1 at Wembley Stadium.
